Ninety-nine long-finned pilot whales beached themselves on South Island, New Zealand on Monday.  Wildlife protection officials shot 33 whales that could not be saved.  Volunteers were able to guide them back to sea on Wednesday, but they turned around and beached themselves again the following day and had to be put down.  Thirty-six whales died naturally and 17 were successfully refloated and 13 are unaccounted for.
